Discovered by Gesellschaft Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt, in 1994. Reasearch group of S. Hofmann, V. Ninov, F.P. Hessberger, P. Armbruster, H. Folger, G. Munzenberg, H.J. Schott, and others. Only three atoms of it have been created (all Uuu-272), by the fusion of bismuth-209 and nickel-64 in a linear accelerator. (Nickel was bombarded onto the target.)
Element 111 has an atomic weight of 272 making it one of the super-heavy atoms. It is a synthetic element whose only known isotope has a half-life of around 15 ms before it decays into meitnerium.
